Glow like a Flourescent.
April 1, 2014
I received a note in my inbox asking “what really lights you up?” Loaded question, since just this morning we lost power in my household – which makes the morning routine rather interesting, let me tell you. It’s hard to sum-up or find just one thing about my job that makes me glow like a fluorescent, but I think I have it figured out with this little gem of an interaction from yesterday:
A regular client, let’s call her Red, came in for her weekly Massage with nothing out of the ordinary going on. 40minutes into the session, she begins silently weeping. (Don’t worry, she’s just fine). Afterwards, I check in with her and she says “I’ve been having such a hard time trying to figure out what I’m going to say for this speech I’m supposed to give on being a [cancer] survivor, and couldn’t figure it out since November. Just now, that experience came back to me, and I wrote the whole thing in my head; I feel so relieved, but not about the speech, just about being here.”
I took the ‘here’ bit of that to mean this thing called life, though I’d like to think she meant my office. What about that makes me light up? Her light-bulb moment makes me light up. That I can be some small part of another’s ‘ah-ha!’ about themselves, their health, life, whatever, makes me happy to get up in the morning, even if it’s just to be present.
Power’s back on, by the way.
